Final Look at Ubuntu 11.10

I live my life two times a year because every 6 months I get my hands on new version of Ubuntu, my favorite Operating system. As of this writing the next version of popular Linux distribution Ubuntu code named “Precise Pangolin” will be released world wide on 26th of April 2012.

UBUNTU 12.04 Precise Pangolin LTS

The LTS in the name means Long Term Support meaning, this version will get support from the Canonical for 5 years. This version will be best to deploy in the enterprise. Ubuntu has its own User Interface called 'Unity' and Unity has been polished very well in terms of performance and looks.

However there's a much talked about feature which we can see in this version. It's called HUD (Head Up Display) for application menus. HUD can be accessed by pressing the Alt key and typing in a description of what you want to do and then it returns a set of matching entries, including some fuzzy matching; i.e. (when you type options it can bring you preferences menu). Over time, it also learns from your previous choices to make the search more and more accurate. Go to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity/HUD to find about more about HUD and see its screenshot.

The default applications in Ubuntu 12.04 are the LibreOffice 3.5 as well as Rhythmbox as the default music player.

Finally if you want to demo of how Ubuntu looks and functions then, open your browser and see it in action http://www.ubuntu.com/tour/.

Nightingale, Songbird for Linux is now back!

Since May 2010 I've been missing my favorite music player in my Ubuntu Linux since Songbird left support for Linux showing the reason that songbird is more used by windows users than compared to Linux. There are so many alternatives for windows but for Linux there are few. Since then, songbird for Linux i.e. nightingale is developed by http://getnightingale.com. And finally I'm able to use it in my Ubuntu from March 6, 2012. Nightingale is available for all three major platforms i.e. Linux, MAC & Windows. I don't care about windows but I care about Linux. You can find it's release notes here. You can download this application from here. You can get a sneak preview of Nightingale running in my Ubuntu 11.10.

One of its major feature is that it is backed by 'Gecko' i.e. what Mozilla Firefox uses to render webpages. Like songbird it has so many add-ons and feathers(i.e. theme). One of my favorite add-ons called 'mediaflow' is still in development. I love this add-on because it can display albums in iTunes like cover flow view. On the right side of the program it's displaying the Lyrics of the currently playing songs from the web. I love the user interface of it and the way I can customize it to my needs. So go and get your copy of Nightingale to see for yourself and don't worry it's 'open source' meaning you don't need to pay to use it.
