My Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot 11.10 with Unity and Compiz

As said in 'The Times' [My Ubuntu setup is faster than a PC and prettier than a Mac]. Ubuntu indeed is faster than a PC and prettier than a Mac. Ubuntu has stood up as the most user friendly GNU/Linux distribution amongst the crowd backed by Debian and funded by Canonical Ltd and is fully open source which means you are free to use it and even to distribute encourage others to use it.
A picture is worth a thousand words but a video is even more worth than what a picture could express. So, here's the video of the latest version of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot in my system.

In previous version 11.04 many critics didn't liked 'Unity' interface. So, in this version 11.10 Ubuntu has improved much in Unity's functionality, stability and usability. I personally like Unity's new location since I don't click on unity dash icon when closing the application. Another new exciting feature is 'Alt+Tab' preview which you can see in the video in action. Another special feature in Ubuntu is 'Ubuntu Software Center' from where you can easily install and manage new applications and most importantly it contains open source applications which are free to use and also there are commercial softwares. And also it has cloud built in with 'Ubuntu One' giving you 5GB of free space; you get all your files in one place where ever you go.
If anyway you still don't like the Unity, then you can install gnome shell or use the classic gnome desktop. One of the most important feature of Linux is it's flexibility, you can customize it's every functionality and user interface.

  1. Not so lucky with my upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10: no graphical ALT+TAB switcher or Workspace switcher (CTRL+ALT) [just plain small icon list], unmodifiable icon sizes at the side panel (dash or whatever...), windows not getting fixed at a side or maximized when dragged to the sides... Seems like unity+compiz (both installed from previous versions) may have some conflicts...

  2. clean install is always far more better than upgrading, all we need is just to backup our files, documents, projects, bookmarks, before running the clean install.
